No the point of the law is homophobia. When transgender people became the new target, the laws were updated to include transphobia (against trans women). The only justification is “gay men icky.” They say it’s because of a higher HIV rate among gay males but they don’t actually take each persons case personally and instead just blanket ban everyone. A cis woman and a trans man can both donate. A gay trans man and his partner can both donate. A lesbian cis woman who sleeps with a trans woman can’t. But the lesbian trans woman can. And all gay men and straight trans women are blanket banned. It’s just blatant homophobia left over from Reagan’s America but it’s never going to change because of the HIV rate veil.
