a person I went to highschool with... he is completely serious

Because it's still accepted for blacks or asians to comment on their own race in comedy settings. But it's not acceptable for others.

That's foolish.

Can you point me to a straight comedian who is currently doing jokes about gays and is doing well? I'm seeing apologies from current comedians about gay jokes from the past. Eddie Murphy, Kevin Hart, etc.

Not sure, I don't follow too many comedians. Both are doing pretty well at the moment, it's ridiculous that they had to apologize for that. It's also stupid that some people think that making jokes about gays is only ok if you are gay but otherwise not. Jokes are jokes, it doesn't matter who is telling them.

Because you're making blanket statements and slowly walking it back.

What do you mean? I don't understand why does it matter that in some countries making a joke about x thing might get you in prison, I'm not denying that. What does that have to do with anything?

We had a discussion in r/legaladvice about this one time that was hilarious. A guy was being investigated by the government for discrimination based on race at his company. He had a full staff of white males and would never hire minorities or women. He claimed that he thought a defense would be "You can't read my mind. Even though what I did may look racist, if you can't read my mind then it can't be proven I discriminate racially."

That's not hilarious, I'm literally fuming. I see where you are coming from but I disagree.

However both are not appropriate if your joke is bigoted. But let's not get off track. These are not jokes in this thread -- these are attacks.

Appropriate is a subjective term, there are people who think that it's not appropriate to assume someones gender. There's a big difference between insulting someone on purpose and making a little joke regardless of the language used. Just curious, do you think that Dave Chappelle is a bigot?

"I like offending people, because I think people who get offended should be offended."
