The Personal weapons of a Kurdish YPG fighter (2016)

Whenever the YPG is mentioned anywhere it brings out a few types of people out of the woodworks:

1) The Romantics:

Wants to fight just like the Brits in that netflix doc, or that other American guy in that other doc on Netlfix who runs Sons of Liberty.

War tourists.

2) The Literal Commies:

The people in a small demographic (in the US) who are in the even smaller demographic of Commies Who Own Guns That Aren't Airsoft.

3) The Mall Ninja:

Does not only want to have the experience of being in Syria while a war is happening, but also wants to "kill ISIS" themselves. Will be surprised, as the IT Brit from the Netflix doc was, that it isn't like COD.

Will probably be disappointed to find a lack of the types of products they went into debt for and perhaps fired once: HK. And that's assuming they weren't Brits who's multitools had already been confiscated.

Gecko45 has been in Syria for a long time, forced instead to hold various AK.

Likely even has a favorite Syrian War Ninja, like that guy who carried an axe everywhere or something.

The Mall Activist:

Is excited to say their favorite trademarked cause represented by various bands within a very vaguely structures chain of command.

Strangely unaware that the YPG has a lot of religious Muslims who dissaprove of the pride flag crew, for example.

Would like to see a "Vegan YPG" flag to make their Facebook profile image. A plug for Trevor Noah or the TV show "Girls" would also be pretty woke.

The Che shirt embodied. May even be wearing one, unaware of the irony. Enthusiastic but harmless to everything but the YPG's image.

Lots of overlap in those groups.

Strangely absent from this list:

People with families:

They have obligations to their children and partners that make a Vacation With A Cause or Pilgrimage for Purpose or Desperate Search for Meaning irrelevant for the moment.

But there's always time for a midlife crisis.

People with stable careers:

Tommy from IT might indeed sell everything in his flat and seek adventure or fulfillment in the glory of war (and he has before). But there are healthier hobbies, especially for people with no previous military experience.

People Not Trying to Escape Demons:

It makes sense that people try to re-invent themselves. What better way to leave behind the past than pick up a gun and be Lawrence of Arabia?

Most people are willing to seek self improvement through acts of service for the people around them. By being a good person.

But they aren't joining the French Foreign Legion, let alone their own militaries. It's just another complicated Syrian faction.

Whatever floats their boat, while it's held up by US airstrikes and assorted assistance.
