Have you personally known someone who was murdered? What's the story and the outcome?

A woman in my building was a single mother of a special needs child, who was 15 or so. She was also a chronic alcoholic. That's not to say I'm assuming she was violent or anything, but it's possible. Just based on my impression of her.

One day her son snapped I guess and stabbed her to death.

He was discovered pacing around the hallways with his dog crying like, "I can't wake my mom up"

I don't know much about the outcome. The neighbor that discovered her body called the cops immediately, but then immediately started contacting lawyers who specialize in special needs youth.

I was always impressed by the presence of mind that showed. Imagine finding a slain women and immediately trying to find some legal advocate for the kid?

I never followed up on the case but I don't suspect this kid ended up in Gen pop w/ a homicide charge. Maybe that's naive of me, but even with a healthy distrust for the criminal justice system I can't imagine any judge jury or whatever sentencing this kid to a standard prison environment. Who knows though.
