Perspective from someone new to the game: the average ranked player is better than you think.

if your friends had dropped out of college due to excessive partying, would you still say they're great at their fields?

because even a college dropout who slept through a couple semesters worth of chemistry or something would have more knowledge than 99% of people.

my point is that a lot of people set competence thresholds when judging things as "good" or "bad." if someone is satisfied with their level of performance in a subject, they can feel free to call themselves good. but if someone is not, they should not be forced to admit that they're "good" or "amazing" solely because they're better than people who never even attempted to study said subject.
