They seemed to click, but Zizek gives hundreds of interviews, many people come to him for sage advice, I doubt he cares enough about Matt to be an unpaid PhD advisor to him. There's countless European leftist young activists, students, journalists, writers who get Zizek to review their books, and most of them ended up getting published because they're motivated, even though they're probably doing the 'starving artist' gig.

I don't think Zizek has time to sort out Matt's motivation issues, even though Matt has all the time in the world (on account of not having a real job), and makes an easy 400K/year.

Zizek once famously said he hated his students, 'If you come to me, I'll fail you, if you leave me alone, I'll give you an A". He was most certainly joking, but there's a kernel of truth there.
