Philip K Dick wrote all his books (until Scanner) under the influence. Is this a legitimate way to gain creative edge?

From personal experience it can certainly help. But I've seen plenty of people just have their fears and paranoia and general mistrust of life just amplified by drugs. It might work if you want to write the next dystopian best seller - but even then if your fearful message is that the world sucks, you might find an audience but I doubt you'll find any personal fulfillment in life.

That said drugs have had a profound positive impact on my life and it has helped with my creativity and vision. Looking back I had taken some crucial steps before experimenting with drugs:

  1. I had made space for myself by quitting my job, having money saved up, and having a safe place to live. I had private space were I could take drugs without "barfing on the world" metaphorically speaking.
  2. I had been meditating for years and achieved some "inner integrity". I knew I could take a little turmoil without spinning out of control.
  3. I was in a place were I felt I had nothing to lose - I was prepared to go all the way.

I wasn't happy but at the same time I wasn't overly depressed. I think those was ideal conditions that my life in a way had been leading up to.

So I started smoking weed and later I took psychadelics - it was a mindblowing experience. It gave me some important insights regarding perspectives - which happens naturally when your perspective is shaken up, twisted and temporary obliterated by drugs. It has taken me quite some time to integrate the insights into my life... in fact I'm still in that process half a year later.

As for writing it hasn't helped me be able to transform my insights into words - but it has helped me understand my vision and confidence of what I want to communicate - I think that is the foundation of having a strong voice... then it's just a matter of practicing speaking it. So I'm still in the process of strengthening my voice and no drugs will help with that. On that note I agree with Alan Watts when he says (regarding psychadelics) "If you get the message, hang up the phone.", you need to integrate your wisdom and drugs won't help you with that.

I also want to say that you can achieve the same insights through meditation - and in fact it's the safer and more responsible way to go about it. I took drugs because I needed something stronger to shake me up - I'm not suggesting it's for everyone.
