I think you took my comment completely out of context. First of all, maybe oblivious was the wrong choice of words. I more so meant that I had literally no idea what it was like in other countries, even though I'd heard about it before. I realized that a lot of people aren't as fortunate as I was to have experienced another culture. And that a lot of people may never get a chance to understand another culture. Also, by organized sports I was talking about all the soccer and baseball games my peers played as children (and I as well). People make such huge deals out of them; parents worry when they can't make it to one of their child's fifteen games. I was not implying that they sit around watching sports all day.

I think we can all agree that it's beneficial to experience things in life; whether it be traveling, playing a sport, participating in a hobby you like, etc. There is nothing wrong with being more "wordlly" just as there is nothing wrong with people who dedicate all their time to their career or hobby.
