Pit bull breaks up chicken fight.

Nice. And I have no doubt the pit bull knew exactly what he was doing. It is I think foolish to assume animals just do and act randomly or instinctively without intent.

I once observed red foxes interacting at a wildlife sanctuary. A young and less than 6 months old male (who had been taken in as an orphan) was playful and jumping around over and in front of a grumpy decade-old fox, trying to get him to play.

The old one was having none of it and hissed and snapped at the cub, who seemed strongly taken aback by the response and went submissive but the old one persisted in hissing and snapping at him, really pissed off.

Enter a third fox, a handsome 3 or 4 year old nicknamed "Clive" who had been watching from the sideline and firmly intervened by jumping in between them and getting in the old one's face while arching his back and hissing. Clive first got old grumpy to back off this way and then as soon as that was resolved, instantly and purposefully turned around and berated the cub seeming to say "stop messing with the old one". I don't remember how exactly that was expressed or conveyed but that's the impression the several of us who was watching and had been observing the foxes for months, was left with. The whole exchange took just a few seconds. The cub calmed down and then he and Clive then went to lie down and rest. I took this photo right afterwards Clive seemed to be "mentoring" the young fox and they remained friends for the several more seasons I watched them whenever I had a chance to visit the sanctuary.
