Pita Forged Papers for his Defence

Okay, so I've been following this story and I have a few questions I would like clarified from you more informed folks, because it really doesn't make sense to me.

Here's how you run a charity event: you contact a reputable charity organization and say: "Hello, we would like to raise money for you", they say: "Okay", and help out with the organization and managing the money. Let's say you pick "Red Cross", then you get to plaster their logo over everything to promote the event. At the end, you write a check to the charity organization, and they go off with their money and save the flooded people, and everybody is happy.

From what I'm reading, this is not what happened? Instead they created a fundraising event for a 'cause' instead of a 'charity', is this correct? If so why would anybody donate to it? Also, from what it sounds like, the organizers didn't understand how GoFundMe works, how PayPal works, didn't know about a business account, didn't plan things out ahead of time... It sounds incredibly amateurish. I don't understand for the life of me why someone would donate for a 'cause' instead of a reputable charity organization, that's just asking for trouble. You just blindly trusted these people to make the money go to the right place? Charity organizations exist for a reason, they take care of all that stuff, they make sure the money goes to the right place, it is not easy, which is why it takes so much administration and experience.

It sounds like the entire thing was run by people who have no idea how to manage money, am I right in saying this?

Listen: Do not donate to anything, ANYTHING, unless you can verify it as reputable. A simple Google search folks, that's all it takes. NEVER donate to a 'cause', donate to a 'charity'.

Also, if someone doctored that document... that looks like it was done in Microsoft Paint, why not simply create an HTML document and change the names and numbers in the code? Anybody with basic knowledge of computers could do that... How could anybody be stupid enough to produce this, if it is doctored or isn't doctored. It strains the brain, which is why I'm left incredulous of the entire thing.

Basically I don't understand this whole thing, maybe I am missing something? Please fill me in fancy Reddit folks, I want to do a video on this topic at some point and don't want to say anything incorrect. From what it looks like, naive people gave money to stupid people (All with good intentions), and some of the money is unaccounted for, whether by malice or incompetence. I really hope that isn't the case...
