The plan to add multiple Gates to block off Gay Street would be a disaster and absolutely ruin this town permanently.

I worked on a remote control retractable bollards project for a town out west a couple few (alright 10) years ago where they cost about $1500 per unit. For this area and time i would guess $2500 - $3000 per. You'd need 2 per lane...so 8 for an entire intersection, 4 at each end.

If you are planning to close from Matlack to Darlington, that would be 32. Probably $100k-$110k total. Plus yearly maintenance.

I doubt these cattle gates would cost half that. Of course if you are planning on running fire trucks and morning deliveries and ambulances and such, the cattle gates are not automatic...would be more expensive and a bit dangerous if they were (you can't just open a cattle gate if people are walking on the street).

You could do the 6" x 4' static black iron bollard (probably cost $25k total) with ample center room for 1 lane emergency or commercial traffic, and just have ample signs and such. The flip side of those is, well, they are not moving, ever.

If it were me, i'd have the school kids paint up 30 some large size hogshead barrels, or 4'x4'x3' flower planters... stick some rocks, sand and flowers in em, leave just enough space for a vehicle to pass, put up some "Road closed" signs and call it a day. $10k tops. I bet places would pay to advertise on them.
