Planning a trip to Belize June 26-July 14. Advice, suggestions welcome. Driving through country first, then San Pedro. How bad is the rainy season?

I have a hard time sitting in one place, so I'm always hopping. I'm giving my wife a lot of time in San Pedro as kind of a trade off for being a trooper and letting me explore the first half.

I enjoy driving, it's also a good way to get to know a place. Especially when I feel comfortable and have a decent grip on the language. I didn't drive when I went to Bangkok or Beijing for example, but other than some shady quality roads I imagine driving in Belize to be fine.

I'm really into history and like to see country. Belize is relatively small, so it looks like we can get around to most place within a day.

1) I plan on contacting Crystal directly, but I read on TripAdvisor that they are one of the few that allow you to drive over the border.

2) I hadn't really looked at the Chetumal visit closely, it doesn't look like much. I think we would maybe stay on Corozal for a couple days and try to visit the ruins at Dzibanche (maybe Oxtankah), maybe stopping at Chetumal for food and possibly the mayan museum.

3) My timeline is still very rough. My wife and I are very good travelers but I hear what you're saying.

4) I had been avoiding the south because of what I had read about rainy season being worse down there...but I am going to look into them.

As far as Belize City, the only reason I keep going back is it's central location. I see it as a home base.

Now I'm going to have to go back and do some research and logistics planning. Which is fun for me.

Thank you very much for all your help. Thank you for confirming my idea of Belize City and for mentioning Hopkins and Placiencia which I had ruled out. Also for asking about Chetumal- I hadn't looked into it and assumed that the ruins were in town.

I am thinking about maybe, because the first half of the trip is inland and its the low season, not making hotel reservations except for San Pedro.

Do you think I could find reasonable accommodations in Belize City and the central and southern areas same-day?
