Platinum 3776 UEF troubleshooting

Hi! Don't despair. I had the exact same problem and my UEF turned into one of my best pens once I fixed it.

When I first got it -- it was, by far, the most dry pen I've ever had. Let me describe it clearly -- it wouldn't write AT ALL. Eventually after some minutes ink would build up behind the nib and a drop would fall onto the page!

I've dealt with this many times with Pilot pens but to a lesser degree.

In my case what I did was -- I removed the nib and feed and carefully, gently inserted an index card between the tines.

But here's the catch. The tines were so incredibly tight that at one point when I was messing with the nib the tines actually crossed like you would cross your fingers!! I thought it was dead at that point!

But I just carefully wedged the paper between the tines and let it sit in there for 30 minutes and then tested it. It was still too dry, but I saw improvement so I knew it was working. I did it again.

All in all it took me an hour of working with the nib to get it working.

If you do anything like this please be careful. I've done it on many nibs so it's a simple procedure for me... but the Platinum's nibs are more difficult than Pilot nibs. The gold is thicker and the tines don't want to open.

If you have time and $12 to spare I would order two Pilot Penmanships and do the procedure on those nibs first, just to get the hang of it before working on your more expensive nib.

Or you could have a nibmeister do it... but honestly, if you like Japanese pens you're going to encounter this from time to time and it's useful to know how to fix it. If you can adjust this issue you can tune your nibs to write with the exact amount of wetness you prefer.

So yeah. Before? My UEF wouldn't write at all. After? One of my favorite pens. Other people use brass shims, 35mm film, etc. I use index cards.

Sorry this post is so long winded. I'm blaming tonight's beer! Good luck.
