I played "Moss". A system seller? The "VR problem".

I've played video games for 35 years

I guess you first need to play 20+ years 2D/flat to be able to make the quantum jump to VR ... this for current VR, first gen stuff. Maybe in 5-10 years it will be different for younger gamers.

Or maybe VR is simply a higher state of gaming, Idk, but there certainly is a trend that older gamers are much more interested in VR than younger gamers.

2D/flat is 'good enough' for starting gamers, while gamers with a 20+ year gaming history want ' something radically new' ... that's where VR comes in.

As said, probably in 5-10 years VR becomes more mainstream, but for now, 1st gen, lower res, smaller game library ... it isn't the priority of younger gamers.

My 2 cents (56 year, gaming since 1981, VR forever:)
