Is playing as female character strange?

It's only strange if someone makes it strange. Just out of curiosity, does this girl who ridicules your playing a female character give you the impression that she thinks you're trying to play a parody of a female as a sort of insult? If so, maybe a little discussion is in order, but either way, you don't really owe her an explanation--especially if she's just fishing for reasons to be offended.

Full disclosure, I play about a 50-50 ratio of male to female characters, and tend to optimize the latter (without sacrificing RP potential, anyway) due to many of the positive role models in my life being intelligent and capable women. I won't lie though--on a more petty level, it really ices the cake when you can steal Guinevere's line from the movie Arthur when male characters start bunching up around you protectively in the face of an imminent encounter.
