PlayStation 5 (PS5) Backwards Compatibility Patented By Sony

Seems to be misleading from the eurogamer comments

This is basically how the current PS4 re-releases of PaRappa (and others like Patapon) work and is much more likely to be related to that. The file dates would also indicate that. Any sort of PS4 backwards compat on a hypothetical PS5 would likely require very little in the way of emulation as there is very little chance a PS5 would be based on anything other than another AMD SoC.

The title of the article is therefore highly misleading at best.

Oh why, Eurogamer? It was bad enough for gearnuke to get 2 + 2 and come up with 7.

This patent is not about emulation in and of itself but is about a specific trick within emulation. Basically, you can identify specific assets within the old game code be it textures, models, sounds, music, etc and inject a higher quality version of those assets as a replacement.

You know what does this? The Parappa the Rapper, Patapon and LocoRoco remasters on PS4. Those three games are actually the original PSP games running on a PSP emulator on PS4 but injected with 4K texture packs and trophies.

Again, injected with 4K texture packs and trophies. What this patent is entirely about. It ain't about a PS5. Could it be used for PS5? Sure. But the patent is about a very specific feature within emulation and not about emulation on any one platform.
