Please help with fear of planes

I used to have a horrible fear of flying, so bad at one point I walked away from three flights. I flew many times before and now I fly quite regularly and enjoy it to the point I find it quite relaxing.

It stemmed from anxiety which I developed. I went to a therapist knowing the fear of flying had nothing to do with flying itself. Even throughout these few years I stopped flying I remained an aviation enthusiasts. I was well aware of how planes fly and the incredibly low odds of anything happening.

I was also experiencing panic and anxiety attacks, I had to get off, or not get on at all.

I would suggest you see a psychiatrist or some sort of therapist as your irrational fears are just that and the root cause needs to be dealt with.

Some anxiety books and some therapists want you to face your fears head on without medication. I am not a believer in popping a pill at every issue but in this case Ativan is my friend. Trust me having an anxiety attack at 32,000 ft over the Atlantic ocean is not fun.

I no longer have anxiety attacks but even as much as I love flying I hate not being in control and especially on smaller planes it gets quite claustrophobic. I take an Ativan just before flying except on shorter flights less than 3 hours. They work immediately to calm and stop any panic. One 1mg pill is all I need, 2 if I want to have a long sleep.

I would at least talk to your medical doctor about them.

The other way is just to inform yourself as much as you can about flying and the mechanics involved. Check out Mentour Aviation on YouTube. He is a 737 pilot and has videos on pretty much anything you want to know about how planes work.
