instead of realizing that someone that has been in business their entire life... who has always reported a profit from their business even if some years after personal expenses there wasn't much to be saved and there wasn't much to be spent on fluffy things... there wasn't money for vacations or new cars or going out to dinner... someone that made their lunch and brought it with them because hitting McDonalds every day wasn't an option... someone like that took the time in their day to even speak to you let along give you some important advice... that is what you didn't realize.
Do I do everything perfect? No
But I did tell you what you needed to do personally... you need to be his partner
you need to be the one person in this world he can always count on
and you need to not wait for him to ask for help you need to provide help
and that help doesn't mean going door to door handing out fliers but it might....

how you react to that in the next few months and years is going to matter.
You need to cut every corner you can and as I said it might mean you going back to work or going to work if healthcare insurance is a big issue because paying for it out of pocket when your pocket is empty is not really an option.. If you or anyone in the family is under care... thats what you probably will need to do and thats probably the biggest thing you might need to do. If you need to take a job at walmart so you can spend half your pay to get insurance for your family then thats something you might need to do so expect that now in case you might have to.
I then went on to tell you ... he can go into business the easy way as a sole proprietor and be set up in a couple days... simply register a Doing Business As name, Getting a Business Checking Account and a Business Credit Card, Registering as a Business Account at Ferguson and HomeDepot and half a dozen other places.. Dedicating a Van which he can deduct off his taxes, Paying his self employment taxes quarterly buy just submitting the form and the payment and doing his taxes on a Schedule C which is easy to do... and MOST IMPORTANT getting a million dollars of Liability Insurance because it costs next to nothing but it means they won't be taking your house if he doesn't solder a joint right and floods someone's basement...
OR
he can do it the hard way and Incorporate and have fictitious stock and yearly required board meetings and file more paperwork than he can imagine... hire a unnecessary accountant, hire an attorney and pay up front for so much stuff before hes made his first dollar that you burn through a big chunk of your savings.

Whether he is a master plumber or not he is going to get slapped in the face when he tries to get contracts from businesses and apartment complexes that require that he has someone else that can be on call and complete the work if he gets sick... thats right they won't even consider you because if he is down for a day or 3 weeks or 3 months and he hasn't written up a contract with another contractor to come out and take over then they will take your bond.. thats what it means when you say you are LICENSED, INSURED AND BONDED and everyone who is sane knows...
You never use your Insurance.. you never rely on your Bond.. you never end up in Court or you can lose your license
Just like for a regular person if a pipe busts you don't first think will my home owners insurance cover this.. you shut off your water... grab your bilge pump(every home has one right? nope) and the garden hose and you pump out your basement and you don't report it because if you lose your home owners or if the price goes up so high you can't afford it.. then when a tornado hits your fucked...

What you need to do is cut back on everything
Your expenses went down to zero
your AC and Heat is off unless you just can't handle it
your water bill is nothing.. (mine was $26 this month what was yours)
You don't pay for entertainment
You don't go out to eat for lunch or dinner
You don't buy a business phone you get google voice with an Obi200 off of amazon and then you can answer the phone at home or on your cell and its free...
For Personal Use if you have an iPhone 47 you sell it and get a $50 tracfone with a 1000 minute card and add a $40 one year of service and you put Google Voice on that and you pay $40 a year to have a cellphone in your pocket instead of $75 a month and you adjust your use pretty much for emergencies when you are on the road only.
You cancel cable and get an antenna and that saves you minimum $1200 a year more and cancel netflix and any other subscription service... which will be more than enough to cover his business's liability insurance and maybe get you out for a cheap dinner once every 3 months.
You hunt for ways to save money and stop spending money
YOU ACT LIKE HIS PARTNER NOT SOMETHING ELSE
Thats the advise I have to give to you...
because if you don't see this now... and if you wait until the point where you do need to cut off all the spending.. then you're likely to be argumentative about it... and that is going to put pressure on your relationship.

and your house is paid off
and your cars are paid off
and you don't have to work
And the biggest problem in your life is that you didn't want to go to the beach this summer because who wants to be hanging out on a beach in 97F humid weather with a mask on... I didn't...
Maybe you have been through All Of This before
and maybe you have seen other people go through it and fail while you kept chugging along eating your peanut butter and jelly sandwich that you made and your thermos of iced tea while they came to work with starbucks driving cars they won't own for 5 more years after leaving their home they won't own for 20 more years and listening to them cry that they couldn't rent a place down at the beach that they wanted for 3 weeks to drive their $60,000 boat around to show off for people they never met and mean nothing to their personal life...
