Types are basically suggestions at this point, you can teach pretty much any pokemon any move, the counters to pokemon require a PHD to learn and remember, they keep adding stats upon stats that add even more to the confusion, and it's simply just become way too much to juggle.

Gold/Silver was probably the best the battle system will ever be IMO. Types were clear, movesets were defined with some flexibility...it was great.

I played Sun and Moon and couldn't even get into it.

This is all my opinion obviously. Some people undoubtedly like all that extra stuff. I just think since the Switch is a new platform with a new userbase, they might try and go back and reel some of their systems in to make sure it gets mass appeal.
