Poland inks $4.6 billion contract for F-35 fighter jets

Absolutely. If air combat would be just launching large number of BVR missiles towards the enemy, a B-1R would be a perfect air superiority fighter (B-1B bomber upgrade with air-to-air missiles, Mach 2.2 speed, improved AESA radar and F119 engines). That is obviously not the case.

There is a reason why just about every 4th and 5th gen fighter has a gun. Back in the 1980's, it was also believed by some that WVR combat and therefore guns had become obsolete, and some American jets actually had no guns since the prevailing attitude was that missiles and BVR would be all you would ever need. It proved disasterous, and since then, every fighter made by the US has been equipped with some sort of gun.
