Police asking about unregistered assault weapon and others

Sorry I just worded it weird. I know what the new law says, my point wasn’t that it defined what an assault weapon was. My point was, according to the definition, what he has is an assault weapon. He got it in the time period between 2001 and 2016, so it must be registered. So if he had that assault weapon past the date the new law says it must be registered or featureless, it’s a crime. So because he already told them he had those features and it wasn’t registered at the time, that’s a crime regardless of whether he made it compliant now, right? Because on another forum I was reading that if it had removable magazines at any point, even if he made it featureless now, it still had to be registered. That last part is the part I wasn’t sure about.
