I once complimented a girl because I could tell she spent some time getting dolled up and she looked a bit down, and my friend with me said something like "see where did that get you?" Then he acted confused when I explained I didn't want anything but to make someone feel better. He acted as though the only reason one would be nice to someone was if you expected sex in return or something. At the time I was seeing someone, and not at all interested in pursuing anything it was just a genuine compliment to brighten someones day. I was dumbfounded that some people will only compliment people as a means of flirtation and not to just be a nice person. I still compliment people. I like making people feel good.
