Porsche reveals 2024 Macan EV to have 603hp, 738ftlbs, and 100kwh.

It's easy to arm chair quarterback and critique Porsche's decision. However, you need to keep in mind that Porsche had certain benchmarks for acceleration, range, and top speed. Those are competing priorities. So for Porsche to meet them at the time the Taycan was designed, they either needed a larger battery pack or a 2speed transmission. They went with the transmission.

Also, I'll add that it's not always as simple as "spin the motor faster". If rotational stress of the motor at speed is the limitation, then strengthening it is potentially the answer. This is what Tesla did with the carbon sleeves on the Plaid.

However, the motor drive (inverter) can also be a limitation. There are physical limits to how fast you can switch the power electronics, which then dictates the redline of your electric motor. The easiest solution in that case is go to a taller final drive ratio (slower acceleration).
