Is it possible to buy a dream car and have financial independence?

I'm insanely obsessed with cars.

I'm approaching half a million in net worth. My current car is an 8 year old Mazda 2 I bought off my mum for $4k.

I had an MX5 for a while, an enthusiast car, and got over it pretty quickly. Luckily I only paid $5k for it. That's the way it goes with consumerism, material purchases won't bring the satisfaction you dream of. After the initial excitement of purchase, it soon just becomes another burden you have to maintain.

I'm close to FI, I'll buy a fancy car after I'm FI.

When I buy one, I'll probably buy used, or at least in the lower end of the performance car price spectrum. Like a small four cylinder turbo instead of a thirsty six cylinder.

The best thing to do would be to obtain what you want, for less. Get value for your money. You can indulge any vice, but do it in a cheaper way:

  • Become FI first, then start saving for a fancy car
  • Buy a cheaper EV that isn't a Tesla
  • Buy a cheaper used Tesla etc...
