Well there were three famines in the 20th century that devastated them more so than more developed capitalist nations but just in overall general food availability aspect things were limited.

Choice of food was extremely limited and was distributed as a necessity only rather than an experience or pleasure like we have today. Food was limited in regards to meat availability, for example, not by resources but instead by incompetence. In a system that tries to “beat the market” in terms of being efficient through centralized planning rather than the teaching of profits and losses these occurrences become the norm.

There’s a few blogs I’ve read out of curiosity after some replies about life in the USSR regarding food and here’s one that recollects on it well.
