Pre-Ordered Battlefront II and it came with this. Sadly I don’t play the game, but for you that do, here you go!!

how can you possibly claim that playing as a hero is core to battlefront, simply because the possibility exists within the game?

Errr, I made no such claim, and I certainly didn't make that claim in reference to the original. What I said was that there should be NO gates on playable characters in a what is effectively a theme park multiplayer shooter. Average Joe is buying this game to experience Star Wars, and play as his favorite characters as they're AVAILABLE TO PLAY IN GAME. Locking them behind a gate to drive microtransactions is fucking absurd. I don't have to play 30 matches with a character I may not enjoy just to unlock Ken and Ryu in Street Fighter, or Sub-Zero in MK - you know, the fucking reasons Joe Casual plays these games in the first place.

That said, an Easter Egg char or two would be fine, or MAYBE Iden as a campaign reward since she's a new character. I'm also fine with a progression system for character improvements that need to be unlocked through play or achievements, etc. But not the characters themselves. Honestly, we're going in circles here and you've yet to argue the actual key point. What purpose does gating the heroes serve? It's certainly not any sense of "accomplishment". It's unnecessary grind in its entirety, however "short" the time to gather the needed credits for "A" character is.

Either way, we're just gonna have to agree to disagree here. Defend the practice if you like. If you think this adds "challenge" or "life" to the game, you could literally implement this feature yourself without needing the game to force the rest of us to wait before we can play the two most iconic players in the IP universe.
