A preference for SUV's over other cars has increased oil demand by 3.3 million barrels per day between 2010 and 2018. In the same period, electric vehicles reduced demand by just 100,000 barrels.

No, because people drive to places other than work. If you want a second car just for commuting, sure. If you want a car that replaces an existing car and can do what the gas car does, no. Only 20% of vehicles travel 150 miles or less, and that is before any battery degradation of 5-10%, or winter 10-30%, or freeway driving 10%.

It is hard to sell people a more expensive yet less capable vehicle.

If the electric car were cheaper than the gas car (up-front) then yes, they would sell. That might happen in Europe soon. But you aren’t going to get far trying to sell something more expensive but less capable unless they’re really invested in green aspects.
