Prepd vs. Extemp Genie

Disclaimer: My reply is based on the features of each at the start of the year.

I personally prefer Extemp Genie.

I started Extemping in the era of paper files and tubs. I was able to develop a system of filing that made it insanely easy to prep my speeches. Auto-filing and auto-downloading of articles is crippling Extempers today. The clipping features are more than enough to make filing quicker and more efficient than when I filed as a competitor (printing every article on a tiny inkjet printer, reading, highlighting, and filing). Searching keywords and seeing what pops up in the auto-cached articles is no more useful than googling about a topic except that you may get better sources (some are pretty bad) in Extemp Genie and Prepd. The process of reading articles and choosing which folders to file them in is invaluable as a preparation method for Extemp. Since I prefer to design my own folders/subfolders, Extemp Genie is the better tool.

Extemp Genie allows you to construct your own file system with multiple levels of depth. For example, you can create a USX folder, with an economy sub folder, with sub folders for economy good/bad underneath economy, and with subfolders for specific indicators under each economy good/bad file.

Prepd, the last time I checked, still only allows one level of depth for sub-folders. It makes the management of articles more difficult.

Seriously though, a lot of Extempers have no idea how much more efficient their in-draw prep could be if they put a little more before-draw preparation into manually filing their articles instead of just clipping to a library and searching all of their articles by searching terms during draw.
