There have been virologists researching emerging coronaviruses with the ability to infect humans since SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV and they’ve been sounding the alarms about the real possibility of something like SARS-CoV-2 emerging for many years. There have been genetically related coronaviruses found in bats from all over the world, not just in China.

I’d be extremely surprised if it was made in a lab (and I am a graduate student of bioinformatics that developed a particular research interest in synthetic virology in 2018). I’m not saying Trump made the virus at all. What I’m saying is that I would not be surprised at all if researchers found evidence that SARS-CoV-2 emerged from a mammal in the US.
