Pretty new to Naruto, first time through Shippuden and this part really bothered me....

I think one of the big themes in Naruto is characters winning fights they shouldn't through force of will/circumstances/talk no jutsu. I think very few fights are actually straight up fights with no handicaps/circumstances.

Naruto/Sasuke Vs Haku - Sasuke survives because Haku was 'nice' and didn't hit any vitals.

Sasuke Vs Orochimaru - Orochimaru lets him survive...for obvious reasons.

Sasuke Vs Itachi - Itachi is dying, plus obviously doesn't want to kill Sasuke anyway.

Naruto Vs Pain - Pain sacrifices himself to save Konoha because of Naruto's speech, he almost certainly could have kept fighting/Konan could have merked Naruto.

Naruto/Lee/Gaara Vs Kimimaro - Kimimaro could have killed all three of these kids if not for that pesky illness.

Orochimaru Vs Jiraya - both super handicapped in this fight

Konoha rookies Vs sound four - saved by the Sand Ninja (Shikamaru and Kiba)

Sasuke Vs Orochimaru - Orochimaru is dying in bed, severely underpowered (Sasuke even says so later)

Even the very end, Naruto Vs Sasuke, Sasuke chooses to say he loses (as opposed to drawing because they were both 100% wiped out) because Naruto did some smooth talking (for 4 years).

So if that bothers you about the Sasori fight take another look at the big fights. Until the war arc it's very rarely a straight up fight.
