Private interviews are inappropriate, but that does not necessarily mean that the bishop is abusing or grooming.

The petition and the movement for change are not aimed at the individual bishops, but the interview practice itself. This is about how interviews are conducted and what specific topics are okay for children. The word grooming is in reference to the general practice, not the bishops. However, every bishop, regardless of his intention, participates in a practice that wears down the personal boundaries of the children. Even if they don't mean to do so, their interview normalizes predatory behavior. The practice should be done away with on behalf of bishops as well as members. The psychological degradation of the interview/confession process goes both ways...bishops are human too and this can't be good for them.
