Problem Connecting to the server persistent error message

Just a couple of thoughts and questions. I only end up with an ip number starting with 169.x.x.x if I have a NIC trying to get an ip number from a DHCP server and failing. My router's DHCP server assigns ip numbers that start with 192.212.x.x and I have a direct high speed connection between my PC and NAS with 10.10.10.1 assigned to the high speed NIC in the NAS and 10.10.10.2 assigned to the high speed NIC in my PC. Both NAS and PC also have 1Gb NICs connected to my router and use ip addresses in the 192.212.x.x range. Can you give more details about your configuration? What static ip address have you assigned to your high speed NIC in your NAS? Is it connected directly to the machine you're trying to log into your NAS from or is it connected to your router? If it's a direct connection what's the ip address of the NIC it connects to? If it's connected to your router what block of addresses are you using on your LAN?
