The Problem With the Term 'Toxic Masculinity'

This claim of a singular, real masculinity has been roundly rejected since the late 1980s by a new sociology of masculinity. Led by the sociologist Raewyn Connell, this school of thought presents gender as the product of relations and behaviors, rather than as a fixed set of identities and attributes.

Raewyn Connell is woman. And while I'm not suggesting that it is impossible for a woman to study things about masculinity, most of this article is based on the claim that her "correct" understanding of masculinity is being misinterpreted by the wider public. To my knowledge, there are no men who are considered experts on the construction of femininity and I can only imagine the size of the eyeroll that would greet the man that tried to explain to women how their identities are formed ("Peak Mansplaining!" the headlines would read)
