Problems with growing house plants?

Logistics basically - I have limited space and mostly North-facing windows, and then there are two rooms with better light and humidity, but they have the smallest windows and least space.

And then there's the cat, who will murder any plant she can reach (and find a way to reach the ones you think she can't), so I have the most toxic/expensive ones in the room that's closed off to her, but that had to be the North-facing one, and some of the plants were just miserable there, so I had to let them take their chances with the cat.

I'm not very scientific about it, it's a lot of moving things around until something works, more often than not eventually something does.
