Problems with my Chromecast

Here are a few tips to ensure a smooth Chromecast experience:

  1. Plug your Chromecast into a power outlet (not your TV's USB port)
  2. Make use of the included HDMI extender that came with your Chromecast
  3. Unplug the extender from the TV
  4. Reboot your DSL/Cable modem by unplugging the power, waiting about 2 minutes, then plugging in the power. When the lights flash in a repeated pattern, go to the next step
  5. Reboot the WiFi router in the same way: unpower, wait 2 minutes, repower, wait for the lights
  6. Reset the Chromecast by pushing and holding it's reset button for 25+ seconds
  7. Plug the Chromecast into the HDMI input on your TV

Proceed to setup your Chromecast. What happens?

Troublesome equipment setups (for advanced users)

I understand that this can be frustrating, however you may need to change your router settings before Chromecast can communicate with your network. Here's some things to check:

Ensure you have the latest firmware update for your router on the manufacturer's website. Chromecast only works with 2.4 GHz networks. For dual band routers, ensure you are connecting to the 2.4 GHz network for Chromecast and use separate names for the 2.4GHz and 5Ghz network. If you want to use a hidden Wi-Fi network, select Other in the drop down for network selection during setup and enter your network's name and password. If you have a router with MAC address filtering, add the MAC address of your Chromecast to the list of filtered devices. The MAC address of your Chromecast is listed at the bottom of the Chromecast setup app. Disable Access Point/Client isolation on your router.. Disable IGMP Proxy on your router. Disable any Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) or proxy servers, on your router and/or computer. Disable auto channel selection on the 2.4 GHz band on your router and assign a fixed channel (1, 6, or 11). If you have an Android phone or tablet you may want to install WiFi Analyzer to assist in picking the channel with the least interference. Enable UPnP/Multicast on your router. Enable IGMP on your router.

For a more detailed explanation of these topics, see our help center setup troubleshooter. Note that all routers are different, so each setting may or may not be applicable to your particular router. Keep in mind that resetting or making changes to your router settings may have unintended consequences. If you have any questions or need assistance, check your router manual or contact your ISP or router manufacturer.
