Is the process a failure?

What more evidence would you want than a report less than a few months into Okafor's career when he was still looking like a promising player?

There are a lot of reports that have come out on the subject, many of them conflicting.

From what I understand, the most likely scenario is that Hinkie liked Porzingis and wanted to meet him, and Porzingis and his agent said no. I have seen no reports alleging that he straight up wanted to draft him and was stopped from doing so.

Still, given that was the case there's not much Hinkie could've done to get a better outcome out of that draft.

That's not true. He could have picked a better player than Okafor, of which there were a lot. He could have traded the pick for a future one for a lower and a future one etc.
