Profits are a hell of a drug!

I get where you are coming but this opioid epidemic has a lot of blame, and those who profited from the drugs deserve a healthy portion of it. Furthermore, companies like Purdue sold it to doctors as a wonder drug with little to no side effects (all the while knowing that is not the case). Have a look at this article I found: http://fortune.com/2011/11/09/oxycontin-purdue-pharmas-painful-medicine/

If you have time, check out this frontline episode, it does a great deal talking about the problems: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/chasing-heroin/

Lastly, I want to add that no, no one forces individuals to use opioids but when you are prescribed them at dangerous levels and your doctors keep enabling that, the blame does not reside solely with the individual. Furthermore we use/prescribe the most opioids on the planet, by far. Without the support of a fully functional universal healthcare system, we are forced to throw pills at the problem instead of actually treating the underlying medical issues.
