Proper Throwing Mechanics Video

Hi Frank. I totally agree with you that there are good and bad mechanics when throwing a disc to accomplish goals of accuracy/distance/completions. But Ultimate is a young sport and we have yet to publish the same level of anatomic theory that exists for sports like golf, tennis, etc. If the sport continues to grow we may see more detailed and expert breakdowns of "proper" mechanical theory. There is definitely theory out there now, but it is usually in the form of articles written by expert throwers, rather than experts trained in kinesiology or sport & movement science. [Hopefully people like Jonah Wisch will continue conducting research on ultimate-specific movements, and publish them]

My questions for you: wouldn't an ultimate player be the more unstoppable if they were able to complete throws with perfect form in unmarked situations (because of well-run offense) AND ALSO be able to bend their mechanics to complete passes when defenders make things more difficult? Does being able to throw accurately and far from a variety of lower body positions and numerous release points have no merit in your assessment of a quality ultimate player? In individual training, should someone assume they will be able to play perfect offense and only work invariable "perfect" mechanics, or should they assume that sometimes defenders will inevitably end up in the path of a perfect throw and work on varying their throws to hit that open receiver?

I am of the opinion that Jimmy would be a more unstoppable player if he could accomplish throwing goals with his current mechanics AND with your mechanics. And you would be a more unstoppable player if you could accomplish throwing goals with your current mechanics AND Jimmy's mechanics. I don't see why they have to be mutually exclusive. Just as you would change your golf swing when aiming for the exact same location if there was a tree you had to avoid, you would change your form to throw around a mark or a lane poach. Your offense will be more efficient.
