Protests in Pakistan over beheading of former ambassador's daughter

Is it more humane to keep someone in a concrete box for 40 years?

No, both that and the death penalty are barbaric. Two things can be true.

And if the point is to keep them alive to make them suffer, then doesn't that make us the less humane ones?

The point of imprisonment is to remove criminals from society so they no longer present a danger to others, and to take away their freedom. The lack of freedom is the punishment. They do not need to be treated like animals once they're imprisoned and that's where many prisons fail. They need to be treated like human beings and given a quality (well, as quality as not having freedom can be) life so they rehabilitate and can be released as functional members of society.
