The PS4 and Xbox One Have Nothing To Fear From $500-$5,000 Steam Machines

well, the article isn't completely wrong. he is right that many only buy one console - but that's only a certain demographic. the other demographic buys 2+ for all the exclusives, and another one console + pc. I also disagree about the "grafix don't matter" and the conclusion "they'd have bought a pc then" - pc gaming is still chained to a desk for the most part and is it's biggest stereotype (reinforced by the ports, how many have local coop for example?). but whenever I hook my laptop up to a tv, it beats the numbers of games (even exclusives) that the latest generation has, and we spend more time playing pc games or straight emus (anecdotal evidence, I know I know...)

also the used games/price bit - not every country has the same access to used games. you get plenty of gamestops/game/CEX in the uk for example, in germany? WAY more difficult. and prices aren't that big of a deal anyway. around launch games still cost almost full price, even used. used games only get much cheaper over time, but so does the price for new games. and then there are reseller's like GMG/gamersgate (watch the S)/nuuvem/g2a/amazon...

no one would say "I'm the demographic for steam machines", but 10 years ago no one said "I'm the demographic for digital distribution and renting games". I know that isn't a fair comparison, but we've come so far that people see pc gaming = steam and won't pick up games that aren't on steam. cynically I'd say the casual console audience is already on pc...

I agree tho, the confusion with all the different builds and prices doesn't help. with steamOS valve should have released an index for builds so (uninformed) people can easily see how powerful the build is AND devs could target those ranges with preset settings - I doubt the majority wants to play around with different settings till they find the sweet spot.
