PSA for New Players (Newbs info)

Be wary when browsing the sub.

This is reddit, and most posters here are redditors first and wargame players second. What this means is that many people with a very basic understanding of the game at best are prepared to write a convincing-sounding paragraph with bizarre content in hopes of receiving some internet points. The upvote system should in theory take care of this, but because the sub is not that active, most posts will float at 1 or 2 upvotes and the beginning player has no way of telling the good advice from the bad. Threads for general, very basic advice such as this one tend to be fine, but newbies should be very wary browsing smaller threads discussing more specific units and situations.

An example, just a while ago someone posted their soviet deck asking for advice, and about half a dozen people told them to remove the OSA-AK from their deck; an excellent anti-air unit with top-tier cost efficiency. None of those posts were at negative points. In another, very recent thread a post (again, at positive points) stated that the only difference between m113 and Humvee is m113 having 1 armor all around. A reply noted that their hitpoints are also different (10 vs 5). The arguably most important distinction in their usage, the m113 being tracked and the Humvee being wheeled, was not mentioned. New replies, edits and votes often appear over time (as is the case in the latter example) but that might not matter much if you only look at a thread once and at the wrong moment.

So my advice to new players browsing the sub is to check out the general advice threads, the meme posts, the cool screenshots, the videos and (especially!) the casts. But if you insist on venturing into the more specific, indepth discussions, read only the highest upvoted post. Learn the game by reading the 200-page guide in the sidebar and playing a few hundred games, not by reading every post on the sub. If you're an experienced redditor this all is probably obvious to you but I'm thinking of people such as myself who mostly come for the wargame discussion. And I'm not trying to bash the sub in any way, the posts are fun and the discussion can be good, but I think it's better for a newbie not to study it with no way of telling what's great advice and what's total bullshit.
