Public transit VS gridlock

Why should everybody be taxed for a public transportation system that benefits some more than others?

We all live on the same planet, which is slowly being destroyed by our excessive use of private transport. 50,000 people a year die in the US alone in car accidents. And yet you think public transport only benefits "some" people?

And furthermore, society isn't neatly compartmentalized to the point where you are only affected by the services that directly relate to your life. You may not have a need for public transport (I highly doubt it though. If you ever use a car, then you have use for public transport), but the people who you come in contact with day in and day out, and the people who perform services which you benefit from, do have use for public transport.

If you use electricity in your home, and workers at the local power plant need to commute, then they have use for public transport and you have use for them. Which means you have use for public transport by proxy. That's because society is an interconnected entity. You can't choose to reap the rewards of the societal model but then also refuse to support it in any facet that doesn't directly pertain to your life.

Beyond that, you're preaching an ideology of total non-empathy that's entirely opposed to the purpose of society, which is that people support each other because they realize they not only reap mutual benefits from the arrangement, but they also fulfill moral obligations to help those who need it. If you only care about you and yours, and you don't want to support any part of society that doesn't directly pertain to you, then you ought to go build yourself a cabin in the woods and try your hand at surviving on your own.
