Pursuing an education in South Asian philosophy

I can start you off but unfortunately my information is 20 years out of date. All my postgrad work, and subsequent lecturing, is in the general area of western philosophy. As an undergrad I was interested in Hinduism and Buddhism. I found the best courses, by far, to be in Religious Studies departments. However, what was the focus here was often founding texts, the history of religious practice, and current religious practice. That is, not necessarily the deeper philosophical concerns that you indicate. Most of the universities I studied and taught at - these total 5 and are all in NZ and the UK - did not offer much in the way of courses that covered Eastern/Asian/South Asian philosophical traditions and perspectives; the odd paper or nothing at all.

I don’t know if I have been of much help. My advice would be to read around, find a thinker who’s work you appreciate and see if they are running courses at their home institution. Also have a look at SOAS in London and see what they are currently offering.
