Qualifications

I have been to Mensa events in many places. I have found they are wildly different from city to city. In my city, it's just a monthly lunch for around 20-60 people. We have a world famous research physician, a shipping and receiving clerk, a couple of professors, the county auditor, a couple of housewives, and a couple of nerds that live with their parents and don't seem to do any regular work. Groups informally get together at other times. For example, when a member who was a military officer told us he taught navigation to pilots so they could get to safety if they crashed, we made him teach a class for about 8 of us at his house. And lots of us are fitness and nutrition hippies, so little groups of us carpool to fun runs. It's not officially Mensa, it's just social networking. But in Los Angeles, there are tons of little well-organized sub groups for special interests. Scuba diving. Those weirdos that are obsessed with puzzles. They have a cryptology group. Things are more formal there. More like an Elks or Moose lodge. In Bangkok, it's foreign businessmen and a few Thai businessmen and professionals. It's very networking focused. So if you ever re-locate, try it again. You might like it more. Or less.
