I have a personal theory that it may be expectation and fear. Let me explain my reasoning, based on my observation of tulpa systems from my work for tulpa.info.
In occidental tulpa systems conflict is rare. It’s not unknown, but the general expectation is that a tulpa will behave amenably (when created to be, say, a companion).
Contrast this with the occult tradition of tulpa making, where tulpas are viewed with suspicion and there are dire warnings not to make human-form tulpas. Here, we see tulpas commonly be fractious or occasionally uncooperative.
It seems to be a case of “you get what you expect”. In these fractious tulpa cases I’ve had much success with convincing the creators to treat the tulpas with respect, and in pretty much all cases I’ve encountered the tulpas calmed and behaved more like occidental tulpas.
Of course it is unlikely that things experienced in tulpa systems would be directly relevant to wider plurality, but it was a thought I had that may useful.
I’m the spokesperson for an entirely tulpa system, plural from 1970 onwards.
