Question Before Investing In Hamster

Honestly, I use a pretty basic seed mix for hamsters and small rodents and it does just fine. I do however give LOTS of treats in an appropriate serving for my Syrian (naked pico de gallo). Lots of veggies and fruits, 1-2 a day usually. This being things like apple, banana, blueberries, raspberries, asparagus, lettuce (in moderation), hard boiled egg, peas, carrots, etc. My hamsters have all seemed to do just fine with this diet. I’ve only had 2 hamster over the years get truly sick and one had a tumor and the other most likely had a stroke, so do what you want with that information. I’ve never had one get wet tail or anything like that. I’ve owned about 20 hamsters over the years of all kinds and they’ve all done well with this kind of diet.

Just make sure you know what you can and can’t feed the hamster. Like lettuce can give them diarrhea if you give too much. And uneaten wet foods spoil and mold in a cage, so give less until you know what they will eat. I always have excess seed in the cage though.

This will be butchered with bad descriptions, so ask if you need clarification lol. For bedding, I use a mixture of Timothy hay and the basic like, puff bedding that comes in a variety of colors at pet stores. I have also used the paper like bedding that’s like the puff chunk stuff but much much thinner in a pinch and it’s been just fine. I have never used woodchips or dust but I always have chew bars in the cage. With the puff bedding, I do have to clean it out and add more bedding during the week because it’ll get gross and patted down so Pico de Gallo can tunnel/bury himself.

Hope this helps!
