Question from a nevermo

  • no such doctrine—it's really hard to get to Mormon hell. But, like all Christian sects, they encourage being kind (so long as you aren't gay or black). They probably are actually genuine.

  • So, I'll elaborate on Mormon hell. There is only one way to go to hell in Mormon cosmology, which is to have perfect knowledge of God and then deny it. Otherwise you go to the Telestial kingdom (Heaven Lite™). This is where you would go as an atheist if Mormons are somehow right.

That is, they don't think you're going to hell, but they don't expect you to get to SuperHeaven either.

  • They were very into poly marriage, yes. Nowadays the mainstream LDS church doesn't practice it but they do claim eventually it will come back into vogue and will practice it. They belive that once God starts to run things here on earth there will be polygamy.

As far as people right now practicing polygamy there is the FLDS church (fundamental LDS). They practice pretty much just like the founding members did, including polygamy. There are a few other offshoots too.

I don't remember when it changed in the mainstream church but it was probably shortly after Brigham Young died and the church gave up its feud with the U.S. Government.

As far as how it deals with doctrine changes? Poorly. The Church takes an eternity to get with the times. It took them forever to stop the polygamy, it took them until the '80s to allow black deacons and priests, they still don't allow gay members or the children of gay couples to participate in anything. Mostly, when they change doctrine they pretend it was that way the whole time and don't bring it up again, or in other situations they say "oh how great it is that God decided we were ready for this change yadda yadda yadda".

It's a bunch of crap, the kind you expect from a P.R. team working pro-bono.
