[QUESTION] Top 5 albums that influenced you and why? Also, your favorite song off each album.

What I draw inspiration from now is so much different than before I started to play, but I'll list the things that made me want to pick up guitar in the first place.

  1. Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park. Favorite: One Step Closer. Yes I said Linkin Park. The riffs were simple but heavy. I loved the groove-y staccato power chord rhythm stuff on tracks like Points of Authority.

  2. Bullet for my Valentine - The Poison. Favorite: Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow. If you are into metalcore, this is one of the best in that genre in my opinion. Lots of nice guitar harmonies, good clean vocals, cool riffs, has a couple nice ballad-y type songs which is a nice compliment to the regular songs, and being someone who loves guitar solos, almost every song having one is a plus for me.

  3. All That Remains - Fall of Ideals. Favorite: This Calling. I really like Become the Catalyst and Six as well though. This is a fantastic album if you are into early metalcore stuff like Killswitch Engage. In my opinion, this is the best Metalcore album. Some very melodic solos/guitar harmonies on this album. The bridge in Six is a very nice example.

  4. Breaking Benjamin - We Are Not Alone. Favorite: So Cold. I loved the atmosphere on So Cold, it has a very ominous sound which starts in the intro and continues throughout the song. Good overall songwriting on this album. It's radio friendly but still done well. Nothing ground breaking on this album, I just liked all the songs.

  5. Disturbed - Indestructible. Favorite song: The Night. Man this album is sweet. Disturbed in their prime. Dan Donegan finally plays solos on several songs. Good modern heavy metal here. While many criticize Disturbed's sound, I honestly think David Draiman is the best vocalist in the modern heavy metal genre.

Notable mentions: Avenged Sevenfold- City of Evil, Killswitch Engage- The End of Heartache, Metallica- Black Album, System of a Down- Mezmerize, Atreyu- The Curse, As I Lay Dying- Shadows Are Security.
