Generally I limit my subscriptions because I don't like how cluttered the subscription list gets. I'll subscribe if I enjoyed a few videos from a creator, and I think I'll enjoy almost all of what they will continue producing (e.g. if I liked an old series of videos but it looks like they've changed directions or I was only interested in a few of their videos, I won't subscribe). I don't really care about the "smash that subscribe!" sort of talk itself, but that tends to be correlated with personalities I'm not interested in watching so there's that.

But also, this is a question where people probably won't be very accurate with their answers. How someone answers here probably won't strongly predict how they actually behave. So doing your own analytics and content tests will be more fruitful for you.
