Questions for Atheists!

I was raised a catholic. I don't think that the US "family values" defended by Republicans are aligned with Christian values. Shunning your gay children is not christian (hate the sin, love the sinner). Weapons are not Christian (turn the other cheek). The death penalty is not Christian (you shall not kill). Jesus Christ is all about compassion for sinners, not so much punishment (at least for the flavor of Christianity I was taught). I think Republicans are using religion as a tool to push their own conservative ideas, they are not defending religious ideas.

About the gods: no, by definition. Anyone who prays to a god or has a relationship with a god is not an atheist.

About the unknown: I don't know so much about a relationship (it implies personhood of the unknown) but I find the unknown intriguing and interesting to explore.

Depends on the timing, and I don't know where to draw the line. I consider that a fertilized egg is not a person. I consider that a baby about to be born is a person. Somewhere during pregnancy there's a point where personhood is acquired, and I don't know where it is. As a result my position on abortion is that it should be avoided as much as possible, performed as early as possible when necessary, and I can't make a choice for someone else.

On a related note, when you think that keeping abortions as low as possible should be the goal of a state, the US is doing it wrong. It should look at other countries with low abortion rates and see how they achieve that (spoiler: they allow choice but educate their citizen). Instead, it looks like some people in the US care more about whether it's allowed than whether it happens. It's more about the punishment than about the result.

I have had suicidal thoughts, though I never tried to kill myself. It had little to do with the existence of a god. Life was shitty, whether a god made it that way or not.

Now I'm happy, I have a balanced life and I'm in control. All without relying on a god.
